Course Setter's Notes:

Come one, come all to the ROC Fall meet at Harriet Hollister State Recreation Area! This park is one of the gems in our area featuring a robust trail system and subtle features. We will have courses for the 1st time beginner to the local expert, with variations between to suit all levels of expertise & adventureness.

The courses feature significant route choice between controls, while staying off the steep sections of the park.

We’ve set this event up as a mock NRE (National Ranking Event), giving everyone a refresher before the Ultra NRE we will be hosting at Mendon Ponds in April 2025. While normally we expect a NRE to bring the most competition & challenge for a year, for this event we are focusing more on the mechanics of an NRE to get everyone comfortable before attending one. This means 2 main differences from our standard local events:

We will be utilizing a remote start. As opposed to most events, you will receive the map when your time starts. You will then follow a flagged path to the start triangle (while the clock is running), continuing to the 1st control from there. This may sound intimidating but it’s quite straightforward and we’d rather people experience it for the 1st time at a local event than a large one. We WILL NOT be doing assigned start times or a formal call-up sequence, but we will happily describe these standard procedures to those unfamiliar.

We will provide separate printed descriptions, remember to bring your holder. We will also have tape available for those without a holder.

During course planning the following conditions have been observed:

Vegetation is at summer-like levels and is greener than indicated by the map, approximately half a shade greener in most areas. This effects runability and visibility.

The ground was generally dry and firm with water levels matching mapped levels. The few major trails that are grass covered are muddy and slow to travel.

Thank you to the volunteers who made this event happen:

Linda Kohn – Course Consultant

Jennifer Manley – Course Vetting

Andrew Beckmann – Course Setter

Instruction is available at all events, just ask at the registration table.  Feel free to bring friends and family.

Pre-packaged snacks, fruit and jugs of water/Gatorade will be available.

Don't forget to sign up to volunteer and pre-register.

See you in the woods!
